Stephen Ferguson joined Simpson, Thomas & Associates in 2009 and his high effectivity and hard work earned him the title of partner in 2021. Stephen has been practicing for over 13 years and his experience spans all levels of court in British Columbia.
Stephen has represented clients in numerous personal injury claims, from minor injuries to catastrophic losses, arising from incidents such as motor vehicle accidents, occupiers liability claims (slip and falls), claims against commercial host establishments (such as bars or restaurants), malpractice claims against medical and treatment practitioners and various other claims for negligence.
Steve has represented clients in their ICBC claims for Enhanced Care Benefits, including claims for Permanent Impairment Compensation and disputes over entitlement to income replacement and rehabilitation benefits.
Steve also represents clients against insurance companies for denial of their first party insurance coverage, including claims against insurance companies for denying the following:
- disability benefits
- life insurance
- critical illness insurance
- mortgage insurance
- property loss including fire loss, flood, and theft
Steve also represents clients in employment law claims for wrongful dismissal/termination and claims for discrimination and harassment under the BC Human Rights Code.

Brar v. Abbotsford City (also known as, the “Abbotsford Jaago Wedding case”)
Simpson, Thomas & Associates was called to represent the majority of Plaintiffs in the often described as one of the most complex and tragic accidents that British Columbia has seen. In this tragedy, six people died and nineteen others resulted injured on the evening of Aug. 24, 2007 in the city of Abbotsford, as a pickup truck drove into a group of more than 30 people who were involved in a traditional Punjabi pre-wedding procession called “Jaago.” Stephen and the team of lawyers at Simpson, Thomas & Associates were able to reach a mediated settlement (no trial) with multiple defendants resulting in millions recovered for victims and surviving family members.
Mohan v. Khan 2012
BCSC 436: In this case, the Plaintiff developed chronic pain disorder following a motor vehicle accident and was awarded a judgment of $673,000. This represents one of the highest judgments ever awarded for a Plaintiff with chronic pain disorder.
You v. Leung
In this case, the Plaintiff sustained serious orthopedic injuries. After a 12-day trial, the jury returned a verdict, awarding the Plaintiff damages in excess of $1,300,000 (less 25% for contributory negligence).
Salaam v. Abramovic
2010 BCCA 212: In this Court of Appeal decision, the Court of Appeal overturned the trial judge’s decision dismissing the Plaintiff’s claim. This case has become an often cited case by B.C. Courts when reviewing the common law duty of care of a motorist.
McQuillan v. Dean
2014 BCSC 2578: in this case, the Plaintiff came to Simpson Thomas and Associates after ICBC had found him 100% at fault. Steve took this case to trial and the court reversed ICBC’s decision completely, resulting in the Defendant being found 100% liable for the accident.
